The Lotus Jianzhan tea cup is crafted from original kaolin clay, meticulously refined and formed to achieve a smooth, dense texture.

Kaolin clay, renowned for its versatility, plasticity, bonding properties, and strength after firing, is the main material used in the production of various ceramics, including daily use ceramics, architectural ceramics, and artistic pieces.

Its warm hue and compact texture are the foundations of its beautiful form and durability.

Exceptional Glaze and Craftsmanship

The iron-rich glaze of the Jianzhan tea cup is a testament to high-quality craftsmanship, showcasing a rich texture with a variety of colors that change under different lighting.

The cup’s glaze patterns vary naturally, making each piece a one-of-a-kind creation. The lotus shape of the tea cup is full and elegant, with smooth lines that ensure a comfortable grip, providing a balanced and harmonious experience with each sip.

The surface of the Jianzhan tea cup radiates a subtle, understated luxury. Its smooth, flowing glaze gives it a magnificent shine, presenting an exquisite contrast that captivates the eyes.

Handcrafted Perfection

Every Lotus Jianzhan tea cup is handcrafted using traditional techniques, infusing each piece with unique vitality and character.

Each cup is formed, adorned with gilded accents, and crafted to exhibit dynamic and graceful shapes that reflect the skilled hands of its maker.

Fired at a high temperature of 1320°C, this tea cup undergoes multiple firings to achieve a smooth, glass-like finish.

The porcelain is finely vitrified, enhancing its density and strength, resulting in a product with low water absorption that is easy to clean and maintain.

Unique and Unrepeatable

Each Jianzhan tea cup is a singular work of art, featuring unique glaze transformations during the firing process that cannot be duplicated. This kiln transformation, achieved through a series of high-temperature oxidation-reduction reactions, produces diverse and unpredictable appearances, making every piece a true collector’s item.

Symbolism of the Lotus

The lotus flower, celebrated for its purity and sanctity, is a symbol of noble qualities, blossoming in muddy waters while remaining untouched by impurity.

It embodies good fortune and beauty in Chinese tradition, often associated with harmony, elegance, and the promise of fertility.

In Buddhism, the lotus is a profound symbol of enlightenment, compassion, and the potential for spiritual growth, reflecting the serene and meditative qualities valued in the practice of Zen.

This tea cup is more than just a vessel; it is a celebration of the lotus flower’s enduring strength and grace, a testament to the harmonious and peaceful life it represents.

About Jianzhan

Jianzhan originated in the Tang Dynasty of China over 1,400 years ago. It is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage of China. Jianzhan is crafted using a traditional formula that includes “iron-rich clay, natural mineral stones, and plant ash.”

It features a rustic shape, a thick body, a full form, and a rich glaze. The creation process involves thirteen intricate steps: selecting porcelain minerals, crushing, washing, mixing, aging, refining, kneading, throwing, trimming, bisque firing, glazing, kiln loading, and firing.

This meticulous process results in a glaze that is unpredictable, vibrant, and colorful, showcasing the profound and mysterious beauty of Jianzhan.

Jianzhan is substantial in weight, with tiny pores in the clay body that help retain the heat of the tea, giving it a golden hue and radiant shine.

It is the ideal vessel for whisking and savoring tea, as it preserves the freshness of the brew, keeping it fragrant even overnight.

Despite its vivid glaze, Jianzhan does not feature colorful paintings or carvings; its natural glaze patterns form spontaneously and are celebrated in numerous classical texts as the “pearl of porcelain.”

The Jianzhan tea cup is known for its simple, robust design and typically has a heavier feel in the hand. The glaze naturally forms unique patterns during the high-temperature firing process, making each Jianzhan piece distinctive and unparalleled, as every cup is a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Jianzhan and Tea

The relationship between Jianzhan and tea is one of destined harmony. The benefits of drinking tea from a Jianzhan cup can be summarized as color, vitality, heat, and elegance:

1. When tea is poured, the patterns and the tea reflect light in fascinating ways, creating a magical interplay of colors.
2. High iron content softens and revitalizes the water, making the tea taste exceptionally smooth and sweet.
3. Jianzhan cups enhance the aroma and flavor of the tea, allowing it to linger pleasantly.
4. Tea can nourish Jianzhan, as prolonged contact between the tea and the glaze results in a colorful, iridescent effect over time.
